Welcome to the Second SECKA update for 2025, our online newsletter keeping you informed about what's happening across our Kāhui Ako.
As you may be aware, the 2025 Budget has confirmed that Kāhui Ako will be disestablished from the beginning of 2026. While this is disappointing news, we want to reassure you that it’s business as usual for the remainder of 2025.
We remain committed to working collaboratively and supporting the professional growth of teachers across our schools. Let’s make the most of the time we have together.
We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events such as the Numeracy Unconference and the Kapa Haka Festival, and to continuing our valuable collaboration throughout the rest of the year.
The SECKA Writing Moderation Working Group held a productive hui focused on enhancing the consistency of writing assessment and moderation for Years 5-8. These years are critical for writing development and school transitions, making consistent marking essential.
During the hui, we unpacked the refreshed English curriculum's Phase 2 and 3 writing outcomes and began aligning them with Overall Teacher Judgements. We also shared our school's approaches to collecting and tracking student achievement data and started the process of marking and moderating student writing samples against curriculum expectations. This collaborative effort will culminate in a valuable resource to support effective writing assessment for all SECKA teachers.
Our next hui is scheduled for Thursday, 7th of August. If you'd like to be added to the working group's mailing list for future updates and invitations, please email Ashleigh D'Cruz at ashleigh@secka.ac.nz
We’re excited to announce our upcoming Numeracy Unconference, taking place on Thursday, 21st August (Term 3).
This unconference will be a dynamic and collaborative professional learning event, where educators from across our Kāhui Ako will come together to share ideas, strategies, and resources that support effective mathematics teaching.
Planned discussion topics include:
Technology tools for teaching mathematics
The power of journaling in numeracy learning
The role of oracy in mathematical thinking
The importance of CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approaches
Effective intervention resources
Strategies for extending gifted learners
The value of pre-teaching concepts
Unlike traditional conferences, the unconference format allows for more open, teacher-led discussion and the flexibility to explore what matters most to participants. We encourage you to come ready to share, learn, and be inspired!
Further details, including venue and registration information, will be shared soon.
"Come Gather: Teaching and Leading with a Christian Heart" was a wonderful opportunity to pause, reconnect, and reflect on the shared calling we have as Christian educators and leaders. Our hope was that the day would encourage and equip attendees to keep Christ at the centre of their teaching and leadership, shaping not only what they do, but who they are for their students, schools, and communities.
We were privileged to have three speakers join us: Aaron Ironside, Brendan Malone, and Pio Terei. Each brought unique insights into faith, leadership, wellbeing, and community, enriching the experience for everyone present.
The day aimed to refresh participants' vision, strengthen their faith, and inspire them for the work ahead.
Feedback was incredibly well received, with one teacher sharing, "Each speaker was so inspiring, leaving a wonderful message and gems for all of us to take away and apply to our lives and the children we teach."
Our Kāhui Ako is proud to present our final Kapa Haka Festival on Thursday, 18th September 2025. Come and celebrate as our tamariki and rangatahi share their hard work, dedication, and incredible talent through waiata and haka. This is a fantastic opportunity to support our young performers and experience Māori performing arts within our community.
Wishing you all a happy and productive Term 3
