Welcome to the fourth and last SECKA update for 2024, our online newsletter keeping you informed about what's happening across our Kāhui Ako.

Within School Teacher Inquiries

As we reflect on the academic year, we are thrilled to share the dedication and efforts of our Within School Teachers (WSTs). Throughout the year, our WSTs have been hard at work engaging in insightful inquiries aimed at promoting best teaching practices and fortifying the use of an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. We are delighted to announce that the inquiries focused on literacy or numeracy to support the strategic goals of our Kāhui Ako, are now complete. You can explore their findings and insights by visiting the link below. These inquiries serve as a testament to the Kāhui Ako's commitment to moving forward in faith together. Congratulations to each of our WST's on such a successful year.

SECKA Kapa Haka Festival

On the night of the 31st of October,  we celebrated a night of Kapa Haka at our annual South East Christian Kāhui Ako Kapa Haka Festival at Sancta Maria College.

We were honoured to showcase the incredible performances of the following kura:

Our festival stage showcased incredible performances, where students came together to weave stories through waiata and traditional Māori performance. The spirit of Kapa Haka came alive, celebrating the richness of our cultural heritage.

Kapa haka is a vital celebration of Māori culture, promoting unity, empowering identity, and inspiring creativity. It preserves traditions, brings communities together, and helps us to live and breathe values such as whanaungatanga, manaakitanga and aroha.

As we look back on the festival's success, we are reminded of the importance of preserving and cherishing Te Ao Māori.

Resilience Survey Results

As a Kāhui Ako, SECKA strives to empower our students to reach their full potential. A key component of this is fostering resilience, a quality that enhances academic performance and overall well-being.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the Student Resilience Survey. Your valuable insights have enabled our Kahui Ako to identify areas for growth and implement targeted initiatives.

A consistent trend has emerged from the past three years of data:

By addressing these trends, we can equip our students with the tools they need to overcome challenges, persevere through setbacks, and thrive in all aspects of their lives.

Waka Ama Funding

We are happy to announce that the South East Christian Kāhui Ako were fortunate to win funding to go towards a Waka Ama programme for our tamariki in 2025.

The programme encourages resilience and will weave schools and the community together.

It is hoped more of our students will be interested in waka ama and it will improve the mental health, wellbeing and social connections of our tamariki

Waka Ama also provides access to the water for students who might otherwise never get a chance to be on the ocean. As a result, Waka paddlers gain a better understanding of the nature of the sea, a vital skill to learn!

Wishing you all a happy safe and holy Christmas and holiday period.

We look forward to working with you all next year.
